Stool Culture Test

If you have some kind of stomach problems which is not getting cured to normal medicines, then your doctor might order a stool culture test. In this test a sample of the stool is taken and bacterial growth promoting substances are added to the sample. This is kept at 37 degree centigrade which is the body temperature for 24 to 48 hours to monitor any kind of bacterial growth. If there is no bacterial growth during this period then the report is negative or sterile. However if bacterial growth is seen then the report of the culture test is positive. For positive cases another test is done which is called the sensitivity test. In this test different antibiotics are used to kill the bacteria and the sensitivity of the bacteria to each antibiotic is given in the report. This helps your doctor to prescribe the right antibiotic for killing the bacteria that is causing stomach problems

Stool Culture Test is best done under some of the leading pathologists in Bihar at Maurya Labs, Purnia.

Components of CBC Test

There are two parts in a culture test. One is to find out if there is any micro organisms that is seen after 48 in the sample. If there is no growth then the culture test Negative and states that " No growth seen within 48 hours". However if there is growth then report will be Positive and will also give the type of micro organism that is seen in the sample. Once the sample is tested positive then the next part of the report is the senstivity check with respect to various antibiotics to check which antibiotics are resistant and which are sensitive to the infection that has been diagnosed.

Reported Parameters

1 Culture Positive or Negative

2 Type of Growth Seen

3 Senstivity to Antibiotics

If a stool culture is positive for pathogenic bacteria, then they are the most likely cause of the person’s diarrhea and other symptoms. Results are frequently reported out with the name of the pathogenic bacteria that was detected. Some of the most common pathogenic bacteria that cause infections and their most frequently encountered sources include:

Campylobacter – found in raw or undercooked poultry and unpasteurized milk. It may become especially serious if it spreads to the blood, and it occasionally causes long-term complications such as arthritis and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Salmonella – found in raw eggs (even intact disinfected eggs), raw poultry, uncooked vegetables, and in reptiles; pets such as lizards and turtles may carry salmonella in their intestines without being ill themselves. Some humans may become carriers of salmonella. Salmonella may be transmitted person-to-person.

Shigella – found in food and water contaminated with stool and from infected person-to-person when careful sanitation is not observed; for instance, it can be a challenge to prevent the spread of Shigella within a family and in a daycare or nursing home setting since very few organisms may cause disease.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does the Stool Culture Test Measure ?

Stool Culture Test is performed to identify any form of harmful fungi, bacteria, or virus in the stool. This test is also performed as the first step to identify gastric cancer. In a stool culture test, your stool or faeces is collected and analysed in a diagnostic lab to observe the build-up of any type of harmful bacteria, fungi, or viruses. It is also used to identify whether you have any other type of medical condition that can be understood from the analysis of a stool sample.

Why should I do the Stool Culture Test ?

If you have been experiencing any or all of the symptoms related to a bacterial, fungal, or viral infection in your bowels (intestinal tract), then it is highly likely that you have been infected with harmful microorganisms. In this case, you would need to undergo a stool culture test. Your doctor can order the stool culture and sensitivity test if you suffer from the following symptoms :

Diarrhea that lasts more than a few days

Stool contains blood or mucus

Stool that contains blood or mucus

Nausea

Frequent Vomiting

Fever

How stomach infections can be prevented ?

The best things to do are to not drink water or eat food that may be contaminated and to follow good sanitation practices, such as thorough and frequent hand washing. Food that might be contaminated, such as raw meats and eggs, should be cooked thoroughly. Cooked foods and foods that are served raw should not touch any surfaces that may have been contaminated. Avoid fresh fruits and vegetables, limiting yourself to those that you can peel yourself. Avoid unpasteurized dairy products. Food from street vendors is generally not considered safe specially during the rainy season. If someone in your household has an infection that is causing diarrhea, careful hand washing by all family members is recommended, and the person infected should not prepare food or drink for others until the infection is resolved.

How are stomach infections treated ?

Severe pathogenic bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract and those causing complications may be treated with antibiotics, but many uncomplicated cases are best left untreated. People with healthy immune systems will usually get better on their own within a week or so. They are instructed in how to prevent the spread of the infection and are treated and monitored for symptoms such as dehydration.
