Blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets in a liquid called plasma. Your blood group is identified by antibodies and antigens in the blood.
Antibodies are proteins found in plasma. They are activators of the immune system which destroys harmful foreign agents like virus, bacteria etc. Antigens are protein molecules found on the surface of red blood cells.
There are 4 main blood groups defined by the ABO system:
Blood Group A – has A antigens on the red blood cells with anti-B antibodies in the plasma
Blood Group B – has B antigens with anti-A antibodies in the plasma
Blood Group O – has no antigens, but both anti-A and anti-B antibodies in the plasma
Blood Group AB – has both A and B antigens, but no antibodies

Red blood cells sometimes have another antigen, a protein known as the RhD antigen. If this is present, your blood group is RhD positive. If it's absent, your blood group is RhD negative.
This means you can be 1 of 8 blood groups:
A RhD positive (A+)
A RhD negative (A-)
B RhD positive (B+)
B RhD negative (B-)
O RhD positive (O+)
O RhD negative (O-)
AB RhD positive (AB+)
AB RhD negative (AB-)

For the blood group test, your red blood cells are mixed with different antibody solutions. If the solution contains anti-B antibodies and the blood has B antigens they would clump together meaning that your blood group is B.
If the blood does not react to any of the anti-A or anti-B antibodies, it's blood group O. A series of tests with different types of antibody can be used to identify your blood group.
O RhD negative blood (O-) can safely be given to anyone. It's safe for most recipients because it does not have any A, B or RhD antigens on the surface of the cells and is compatible with every other ABO and RhD blood group.

What is ABORh Test ?
You will still meet many people who do not know there blood group. When they need transfusion then the test is done to find out their blood group. Also these people cannot donate the blood as they again do not know their blood type. Thanks to student profiling being done in school these days this generation is well aware about their blood groups. The test that is done to find out the blood group of a person is ABO Rh. In ABO Rh, A, B and O are the three blood groups and Rh is whether it is positive or negative. So a person with blood group A can be A+ or A-.
Why should I do the ABORh Test ?
ABO RH test is done to find out the blood group and the Rh typing. Knowing your blood group is very important for you and your near and dear one’s. If you know your blood type then in case you need transfusion you can inform the doctor. Similarly if someone needs blood then you can donate the blood.
How is the ABORh Test Done ?
A blood sample is tested against 2 solutions in a laboratory – one with antibodies against the A antigen (Anti-A) and one that has an antibody against the B antigen (Anti-B). The way blood reacts to antibodies is an indicator of which type of antigens are present in the blood. If it doesn’t react for both, it must be the O-type.
How often should ABORh Test be Done ?
As such the Blood Group testing through ABO Rh test needs to be done once only because the blood group will not change over the life time. However every time during the transfusion or donation the blood bank or the doctor will check the blood group type to ensure zero errors and make the process documented instead of finding it out from the patient. A wrong group blood transfused can lead to severe complications.
