Urine Microalbumin Test

Urine Microalbumin is a very common test advised for diabetic patients for checking minuscule amounts of albumin in your urine. Albumin is a protein needed for tissue growth and healing. It can leak into your urine when your kidneys aren't working as they should. The test can find out if diabetes has damaged your kidneys. Because such small amounts of albumin may not show up during routine urine testingmost of the doctors use this test to look for changes in albumin levels that mean complications from diabetes or other conditions. If kidney disease is found early, it may be treated successfully. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure in India. Early detection of kidney damage is important to prevent long-term complications. People with diabetes should have a urine test for albumin when first diagnosed and then at least once a year after that. If you have high blood pressure you should also get the urone microalbumin test done once a year.

Reported Parameters

Test results may vary depending on your age, gender, health history, and other things.

Results for a 24-hour urine microalbumin test are given in milligrams per 24 hours (mg/24 hr).

Results for ACR are given in milligrams per gram (mg/g).

Normal results are:

- 24-hour microalbumin: Less than 30 mg/24 hr

- ACR: 0 to 30 mg/g

If your results show a small amount of albumin, you may have to repeat the test to confirm the results. A moderate amount of albumin could mean early stages of kidney disease, and it's likely your healthcare provider will need to adjust your treatment. Finding microalbumin in your urine also may mean you are at a higher risk for heart disease. Higher levels of microalbumin may also be caused by blood in your urine, a urinary tract infection, and an acid-base imbalance in your blood.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does the Urine Microalbumin Test Measure ?

Why should I do the Urine Microalbumin Test ?

People with diabetes have an increased risk for kidney damage. The "filters" in the kidneys, called nephrons, slowly thicken and become scarred over time. The nephrons begin to leak certain proteins into the urine. This kidney damage can also start to happen before any diabetes symptoms begin. In the early stages of kidney problems, blood tests that measure kidney function are usually normal. If you are having any of the following problems then you need to get the test done:

- Some immune and inflammatory disorders affecting the kidney

-Some genetic disorders

-Rare cancers

-High blood pressure

-Inflammation in the whole body (systemic)

-Narrowed artery of the kidney

-Fever or exercise.

How is the Urine Microalbumin Test Done ?

You will usually be asked to give a small urine sample while at your health care provider's office. In rare cases, you will have to collect all of your urine at home for 24 hours. To do this, you will get a special container from your provider .

How often should Urine Microalbumin Test be Done ?

For known diabetic patients the Urine Micro Albumin Test should be done ideally once in 6 months and minimum once an year. People with chronic Kidney Disease should keep checking with their doctor for the symptoms when it is required .
