Blood has several components each one of which have a different function. One of the components of the blood is platelets which bind the blood together and play an important role in the clotting of the blood. Whenever there is any injury to the body and it starts bleeding, the platelets help in stopping the bleeding by forming a clot. If this was not the case then any small injury would result in excessive bleeding and death.
Whenever a patient has to undergo any kind of surgery tests like Bleeding Time (BT), Clotting Time (CT), APTT, PT INR are done to ensure the fitness for surgery.

Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) is an advanced version of PTT test. The aPTT test is used to measure and evaluate all the clotting factors of the blood by measuring the time (in seconds) it takes a clot to form after adding calcium and phospholipid emulsion to a plasma sample.
APTT test is generally advised by the doctor for patients:
Who are planned for a surgery
Who are having tendency of clot formation
Who have undergone a heart surgery or angioplasty
Patients who have suffered a brain stroke
In some cases if the patient is put on blood thinners then the doctor may advise you to go for APTT test every month so that clotting time could be monitored and dosage of blood thinners could be regulated accordingly.

What is aPTT Test ?
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) test is the simplest way to find out the clotting time of blood. Your platelets are responsible for the clotting of blood. People on blood thinners need to be very careful about their APTT values as high or low APTT can lead to issues with clot formation or uncontrolled bleeding. It is also part of the Pre-Anaesthesia Package at Maurya Labs, Purnea. This package has been made keeping in mind the requirements of the patient undergoing a surgery.
Why should I do the aPTT Test ?
APTT test is generally advised by the doctor for patients:
Who are planned for a surgery
Who are having tendency of clot formation
Who have undergone a heart surgery or angioplasty
Patients who have suffered a brain stroke
In some cases if the patient is put on blood thinners then the doctor may advise you to go for APTT test every month so that clotting time could be monitored and dosage of blood thinners could be regulated accordingly.
How is the aPTT Test Done ?
The APTT test is a simple blood test with no need for fasting before the test. The blood sample can be taken by the phlebotomist at a pathology lab or at home. At Maurya Labs, Purnea the test is done on a machine called Fully Automatic Coagulation Analyzer StART from France. The sample collection takes less than a minute.
How often should aPTT Test be Done ?
An APTT test should be done as per the advise of the doctor. For patients who are on blood thinners or are having tendency of clot formation should ideally get the test done every 3-4 weeks or as advised by the doctor and keep a track of their clotting time.
