Phosphorus is one of the essential minerals in the body mainly confined in the teeth and bones. Infact about 85% of the phosphorus in the body is store in teeth and bones. Phosphorus is vital for energy preservation, bone and teeth growth, and nerve and muscle production. Essentially, it also plays a structural role in cell membranes and nucleic acids.
When phosphorus combines with oxygen in the body phosphate is produced. The kidneys filter out phosphate from the body. Lower or higher levels of phosphorus could signal an underlying health condition. Dairy products and meat are considered as rich source of phosphorus. The phosphorus test measure the amount of phosphorus in the blood. Very high or low levels of phosphorus in the body can be a sign of an underlying disease like kidney probles, liver problems, diabetes etc.

What does the Phosphorus Test Measure ?
A phosphorus test determines the amount of phosphorus in the bloodstream. A doctor recommends this blood test when he suspects an underlying condition. Abnormally high or low levels could be a sign of uncontrolled diabetes, chronic kidney conditions, liver disease, osteoporosis, hyperglycemia, over or under exposure to vitamin D, or bone disease. These conditions could be detrimental to health.
Why should I do the Phosphorus Test ?
If a patient shows any symptoms of abnormal phosphorus levels like unexplained weakness, sudden fatigue, bone disorders then a doctor may suspect an issue with the kidneys. A lower or higher level of this mineral could also signal uncontrolled diabetes, severe malnutrition, endocrine disorders or hormonal imbalance. Suspecting such conditions, a doctor recommends a phosphorus test.
How is the Phosphorus Test Done ?
The CBC test is a simple blood test which generally does not require fasting but in some cases doctors recommend a fasting for 12 hours. The blood sample can be taken by the phlebotomist at a pathology lab or at home. At Maurya Labs the test is done on a fully automatic machine. The sample collection takes less than a minute and report is delivered the same day.
How often should Phosphorus Test be Done ?
High levels of phosphorus in the body is known as hyperphosphatemia. This condition is considered harmful and can be life threatening as well depending upon the root cause of high phosphorus levels. A patient with elevated phosphorus levels may feel fatigued, weak, have red eyes, experience uncontrolled itching, or notice muscle and joint pain. Sometimes, a patient may also feel constipated, nauseous, or even vomit. It is advisable to seek the opinion of a doctor who may recommend a phosphorus test.
