Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is an enzyme found in the thyroid gland. Thyroid gland produces T3 and T4 hormones which help in keeping the body active. These hormones perform many other functions in the body. If a person has been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism ( Low levels of T3 and T4) then it could be because of inadequate functioning of the thyroid gland.
In some patients this hypothyroidism could be due to an immune condition called Hashimoto's disease. In Hashimoto's disease the immune system makes anti TPO antibodies that attack the TPO and also the thyroid gland. Antibodies that attack the thyroid can cause swelling in the gland. This results in thyroid gland malfunctioning and not producing enough quantities of T3 and T4 Hormones leading to Hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism can be caused by the inadequate functioning of the thyroid gland. However if Anti TPO Antibodies are found in the blood then the cause of Hypothyroidism could be due to Hashimoto's disease which is an autoimmune disease.
You also may need a TPO antibody test if you're pregnant and have an immune system condition that involves the thyroid. Pregnant people with TPO antibodies have a higher risk of thyroid disease after pregnancy than do those without the antibodies.
Some people with TPO antibodies may not have thyroid disease. But the presence of TPO antibodies may raise the risk of future thyroid disorders.
The Anti TPO test is a simple blood test with need for 12 hours of fasting before the test. The blood sample can be taken by the phlebotomist at a pathology lab or at home. At Maurya Labs this test is done on Cobas Immunoassay Analyzer and the report is given on the same day.

What is anti TPO antibody test ?
Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO) destroy cells of thyroid gland and cause hypothyroidism. Thyroglobulin antibodies (ATA) prevent formation of thyroid hormone leading to hypothyroidism. Thyroid antibodies test measure both Anti TPO & ATA. They are an important tool for doctors and patients when it comes to diagnosing and monitoring diseases related to the thyroid. TPO and ATG are used to measure levels of thyroid antibody proteins in the blood. These can indicate various thyroid problems. TPO and ATG are the most commonly tested for and will tell the doctor if the patient has an autoimmune condition or a problem with the actual thyroid gland. They can also be used to assess the effectiveness of a patient’s thyroid treatment.
Abnormal levels of red blood cells, hemoglobin or hematocrit may be a sign of anemia, heart disease or low iron levels in your body.
Low white cell count may be a sign of an autoimmune disorder, bone marrow disorder, or cancer.
High white cell count may be a sign of an infection or a reaction to medicine.
Low platelet count can be a signal of blood cancer, alcoholic liver disease, viral infections like HIV, Hepatitis etc.
What does anti TPO antibody test measure ?
Thyroid antibodies test measure both Anti TPO & ATA which are responsible for destruction of cells in thyroid gland and also in reduction of production of thyroid hormone.
Who should do the anti TPO antibody test ?
Doctor will advise Anti TPO test for following patients:
Patients who have deranged Thyroid Function Test Report
Patients with fatigue
Those with weight changes
