Your body needs iron to make healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. Iron is also important for healthy muscles, bone marrow and organ function. A TIBC (total iron-binding capacity) test done at Maurya Labs is a blood test that measures your blood’s ability to attach to iron and carry it throughout your body. Doctors use it to help diagnose iron-deficiency anemia and other iron metabolism conditions. It is a very common test prescribed by gynecologists and physicians in Bihar for diagnosis anemia in children and females.
More specifically, a TIBC test shows the amount of transferrin in your blood. Transferrin is a protein your liver makes that regulates the absorption of iron into your blood.

Generally, the normal TIBC range is 240 micrograms per deciliter (mcg/dL) to 450 mcg/dL. It’s important to know that providers typically combine the results of TIBC and other tests, like blood iron and ferritin tests to make diagnoses. However at Maurya Labs the report of Total Iron Binding Capacity Test is very clear and is as per the standards defined by NABL. Maurya Labs is the only NABL lab in entire Seemanchal region of Bihar and we have maintained our standard of reporting from the last 26 years.

TIBC and ferritin are related tests, but they’re not the same. A ferritin test measures the level of ferritin which is a protein that stores iron inside your cells. While a TIBC test measures how your body transports iron via transferrin. In simple language a ferritin test measures how much iron your body stores. Ferritin is generally considered as a better marker to assess iron deficiency than TIBC. At Maurya Labs in Bihar we conduct both the tests as per the advise of the doctor.

What does the TIBC Test Measure ?
A TIBC test shows the amount of transferrin in your blood. Transferrin is a protein your liver makes that regulates the absorption of iron into your blood.
Abnormal levels of red blood cells, hemoglobin or hematocrit may be a sign of anemia, heart disease or low iron levels in your body.
Low white cell count may be a sign of an autoimmune disorder, bone marrow disorder, or cancer.
High white cell count may be a sign of an infection or a reaction to medicine.
Low platelet count can be a signal of blood cancer, alcoholic liver disease, viral infections like HIV, Hepatitis etc.
Why should I do the TIBC Test ?
Total iron binding capacity (TIBC) is a blood test to see if you have too much or too little iron in your blood. Iron moves through the blood attached to a protein called transferrin. This test helps your doctor know how well that protein can carry iron in your blood.
Is test TIBC test done only in case of iron deficiency?
The TIBC test is done in case there is iron deficiency as well as when there is overload of iron. In case of low iron levels the serum iron level continues to decrease and transferrin and TIBC and UIBC increase. As this stage progresses, fewer and smaller red blood cells are produced, eventually resulting in iron deficiency anemia. Transferrin saturation is decreased with iron deficiency. Alternatively if the iron level and transferrin saturation are high, the TIBC, UIBC and ferritin are normal and you have a clinical history consistent with iron overdose, it is likely you have iron poisoning. This occurs when a large dose of iron is taken all at once (acute) or over a long period of time (chronic).
