Why is fasting required for this test ?

Many tests in this package can be done without fasting also but two tests which should be done in 12 hours of fasting is Lipid Profile and Blood Sugar Fasting. When we consume food, it gets converted in VLDL and Triglycerides raising their levels in the blood. This will distort the value of Total Cholesterol in the body. This package should be done in the morning around 8 am with 12 hours of fasting. On the night before the test do not eat a heavy meal or consume alcohol. Heavy meal will affect your Lipid values while Alcohol will derange the Liver Function Test unless you consume alcohol every day.

What does the HbA1C test measure ?

As we all know, glucose is the sugar present in the blood. When the amount of glucose is more in the blood, the more it binds to haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is the part of the red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Since the life of the Red Blood Cells is 3 months, this test gives the value of average sugar levels in your body over the last 3 months. This is a much better measure of your sugar levels than Blood Sugar test.

The HbA1c test measures what percentage of your hemoglobin cells are coated with sugar rendering them ineffective in carrying oxygen.

HbA1c readings are reported as a percentage and can be interpreted as below:

Less than 5.7% - Non Diabetic

5.7% to 6.4% - Prediabetic

>= 6.5% - Diabetic
